How to keep handmade Tufted Rugs clean

by Alex Davidsen on Oct 09, 2022
How to keep handmade Tufted Rugs clean

Whether you made your handmade tufted rug yourself or purchased it, it is a prized possession in your home. You want to keep it clean and maintain it so that it can live for a few more years. But, most importantly, you want to keep stains, pet hair, and dirt out of the pile.

Vacuum your handmade tufted rug on a regular basis to keep it clean. Check the rug for stains and clean them up as soon as you find them. If you have pets, you should vacuum every other day to remove the hair. The tufted rug should never be steam cleaned. The colours would fade and the pile of the rug would be damaged as a result.

A rug pad should be used to extend the life of the rug. This will prevent wear and tear and keep it clean for a longer period of time. Continue reading to learn how to clean handmade tufted rugs properly.

Vacuum your tufted rugs

Cleaning the handmade tufted rug would primarily consist of vacuuming it. The vacuum cleaner removes all dirt, dust, and debris from the rug pile, keeping it fluffy. That being said, when vacuuming the rug, keep the following tips in mind.

  • Once a week, vacuum the rug. If you have a lot of visitors or the house gets a lot of foot traffic, vacuum the rug every 2 to 3 days.
  • If you have shedding pets, you should vacuum the tufted rug every other day at most. The hair contains bacteria, transforming the rug into a Petri dish.
  • Run the vacuum over the rug 3 to 5 times. Pace yourself and avoid rushing. Allow the vacuum to draw and remove any hidden debris from the rug.
  • Use a suction vacuum to remove dust from the rug without harming the pile.
  • Always turn off the vacuum's beater motor.
  • Use the rotary brush nozzle attachment at your own risk.

Thoroughly clean stains

Stains and spills are unavoidable, especially in homes with children and pets. The most important thing to remember is to clean the stain as soon as possible. The stain will not set, making it more difficult to remove. The following suggestions should assist you in removing any stains from the tufted rug.

  • If a liquid has caused the stain, cover it with a clean cloth and press firmly to absorb the liquid. This is especially true for soda, wine, and coffee stains.
  • Before working on dry stains that have set, soak them in hot water to soften them.
  • Mix a quarter teaspoon of white vinegar into 4 cups of warm water to remove light stains like juice and mud. Spray the liquid on the rug to dampen it, then work on the stain with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Coffee and wine stains are extremely difficult to remove. To one cup of warm water, add a quarter teaspoon of dish liquid. Shake the liquid and spray it on the stain to moisten it. After that, blot it with a clean cloth.
  • If your dog pees on the rug, sprinkle baking soda on the wet spot and allow it to absorb the urine for a few minutes. Spray the stain with water before adding the baking soda if it is dry. The baking soda should then be vacuumed away.
  • Do not rub the stain before applying the appropriate cleaning solution. This would push the stain deeper into the rug's fabric.
  • If you want to clean the tufted rug with shampoo, make sure it's gentle and won't harm the pile.

Conclusion

Vacuuming handmade tufted rugs at least once a week is one of the best ways to keep them clean. If you have pets or children, you should vacuum the rug every 2 to 3 days. Remove stains as soon as they occur and before they dry.
